The Blue Sheep Trek of Bhutan’s Hidden Valleys

The Yaktsha (Soi Yaktsa) Trek is one of Bhutan’s most scenic journeys, combining dramatic Himalayan landscapes, alpine valleys, and rich cultural heritage. The trek follows the route to Jomolhari Base Camp, passing through high mountain passes, yak-herding settlements, and lush valleys adorned with waterfalls and rhododendrons. Along the way, trekkers enjoy magnificent views of Mount Jomolhari (7314m), Jichu Drake (6989m), and other striking peaks.

This trek is also known as the “Blue Sheep Trek” because of the abundance of Himalayan blue sheep often spotted along the trail. Beyond natural beauty, the journey offers unique cultural experiences, with visits to historic dzongs, monasteries, and traditional Bhutanese villages in Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. A mix of adventure and immersion, the Yaktsha Trek is perfect for trekkers seeking wilderness and cultural encounters.

Itinerary

On a clear day, the flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Upon arrival, you will be greeting you by our representative. In Paro, visit the 17th century Ta Dzong (watch tower). Next head to the Paro dzong (Rinpung Dzong) meaning “fortress of the heap of the Jewels”. Overnight in resort.

After breakfast, you will hike to the magnificent Taktshang Monastery at 3100m. after exploring the monastery, you enjoy a lunch at the Taktshang cafeteria. After lunch you will walk further down to the valley where your transport will be waiting to transfer you back to the town. Explore the Paro town and hotel. Overnight in resort.

11KM | 4-5 HOURS | 250M ASCENT | DESCENT 60M | CAMP ALT 3110M

Your trek begins with a drive to Zangkipang, the trailhead, passing through stretches of apple orchards and forested areas. The route follows a gentle gradient, winding slowly through conifer, rhododendron trees along the Paro Chhu and will reach to the army check post. After 2 to 3 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will arrive at Shingkharap, a broad open space with a lone house that serves as a resting and meal stop for highlanders on their journeys. From here, it is a short walk to your campsite set at 3110 meters.

15KM | 5-6 HOURS | 650M ASCENT CAMP ALT 3750M

The trail continues along the Pa Chhu (Paro River), winding up and down through beautiful forests of pine, oak, and spruce. After crossing a bridge to the left side of the river, you will stop for a hot lunch. The journey then resumes, following the riverbank as the path climbs through rhododendron forests before crossing the river once more to finally reach your campsite, set at an altitude of 3750 meters.

17KM | 4-5 HOURS | 290M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 4040M

Today’s trek takes you above the tree line at around 3,700 meters. From camp, the trail climbs steadily until you reach an army camp, then continues along the river with magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. The route passes through a muddy stretch of trail, alongside a mani wall, and into traditional yak country. A hot lunch will be served, after which the hike continues past the settlements of Soe and Takethang. The final stretch leads across a broad plateau, up a stream bed, and through Dangochang village before reaching the spectacular campsite of Jangothang at 4040 meters. From here, the views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake are truly breathtaking.

Today you will set out on a four-hour acclimatization hike to the north of the camp. The trailless slope gradually rises, opening up to magnificent views of Jichu Drakye (6,989m). This area is rich in wildlife, and you may encounter blue sheep, griffon vultures, golden eagles, Himalayan rhubarb, and the rare blue poppy. Jangothang itself is a flat grassy basin with the remains of an old fortress standing against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Alternatively, you may opt for a gentler two-hour excursion to the twin Tshophu Lakes on the route to Bongtela Pass. Since the altitude here is challenging for many, a rest day is highly recommended. Those who prefer can relax at camp, making the most of the serene surroundings and mountain views.

16KM | 6-7 HOURS | 810M ASCENT | 1090M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 3800M

Cross the high Bonte La Pass, offering magnificent views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and nearby lakes. After the pass the trail descend criss crossing Yak trails down to the Dhumzo chhu through yak pastures and valleys to camp at Soi Yaktsha, surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls.

12KM | 5-6 HOURS | 720M ASCENT | 350M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4100M

Climb through forests and meadows to the Tagalun Pass, enjoying views of Jomolhari and valleys below. Descend to a beautiful campsite at Thombushong, often along the migratory route of Takin, Bhutan’s national animal.

13KM | 5-6 HOURS | 200M ASCENT | 1650M DESCENT

Today we’ll start our half an hour climb to Thombula where we’ll walk on the ridge and enjoy spectacular views of several mountain peaks, the closest one being Jichu Drake (5980 Meters). During the spring the mountains around are covered with beautiful rhododendron of different colours. After a while the path descends very steeply to Gunitsawa (2730m). Your vehicle will be waiting here to drive to Thimphu. Overnight in Thimphu.

Altitude 2320m.

We will have time to explore the capital today and visit one of the largest Buddha bronze statues in the world. Plan on visiting the following local sites; The Memorial Chorten, Painting School, National Library, Takin Preserve Centre, and Tashichho Dzong. Dinner and leisure time at town. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Drive to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass (3100m), marked by 108 chortens and offering spectacular mountain views. Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), the majestic Punakha Dzong and the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan. Overnight in Punakha.

Before returning back to Paro visit Wangdue Phodrang Dzong. Drive to Paro via Thimphu, stopping for lunch and some leisure time to shop or explore the capital. Continue to Paro for your final overnight stay.

After breakfast, according to your flight schedule we will drive you to the airport.
