28 DAYS Snowman Trek —The World’s Toughest Himalayan Adventure
The Snowman Trek is Bhutan’s ultimate trekking adventure and one of the most challenging high-altitude treks in the world. Often referred to as the hardest trek on earth, it traverses Bhutan’s remote northern border with Tibet, crossing 13 Himalayan Mountain passes, many above 5,000 meters. The trek offers unparalleled experiences—vast alpine landscapes, turquoise lakes, remote yak-herding settlements, and some of the most pristine mountain views anywhere in the Himalayas. For seasoned adventurers seeking the ultimate Himalayan challenge, this trek promises the adventure of a lifetime.

- Autumn (late Sept – Oct): Best time with clear skies, crisp air, and excellent mountain views.
- Spring (June – Aug): Trails are alive with wildflowers, and valleys are lush, but there is a higher chance of rainfall.

Itinerary
On a clear day, the flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Upon arrival, you will be greeting you by our representative. In Paro, visit the 17th century Ta Dzong (watch tower). Next head to the Paro dzong (Rinpung Dzong) meaning “fortress of the heap of the Jewels”. Overnight in resort.
After breakfast, you will hike to the magnificent Taktshang Monastery at 3100m. after exploring the monastery, you enjoy a lunch at the Taktshang cafeteria. After lunch you will walk further down to the valley where your transport will be waiting to transfer you back to the town. Explore the Paro town and hotel. Overnight in resort.
11KM | 4-5 HOURS | 250M ASCENT CAMP ALT 3010M
Today you will dive to the starting point of the trek called Zangkipang, where our trekking crews and horses will be waiting. It is a light trek moving slowly on a gradual slope through conifers and rhododendrons flanking the Paro Chhu. After 2/3 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will reach at Shingkharap. The camp will be near the beautiful Pachhu river. Camp at an Altitude of 3010m.
15KM | 6-7 HOURS | 650M ASCENT CAMP ALT 3650M
We will begin trekking along the trail, which follows the river through a heavily forested area, narrowing and closing in, eventually winding up and down along the drainage. Hot lunch will be served along the trail. After lunch follow the river climbing through rhododendrons forest and finally crossing the bridge again, reaching to the campsite at the altitude of 3650m.
16KM | 4-5 HOURS | 290M ASCENT CAMP ALT 4050M
In the morning, after passing a small army post, the trail will slowly leave the forest line and gradually climb into a beautiful valley, passing Tegethang. After crossing the tree line enjoying the stunning view of the surrounding peaks. Hot lunch will serve on the way. A short walk into the valley will take you to the base camp at Jangothang at an Altitude of 4050m.
Rest day at Jangothang, enjoy the superb view of all around. You may choose to either rest at the camp or go for an excursion to Tshophu, a twin lake.
18KM | 6-7 HOURS | 800M ASCENT CAMP ALT 4100M
The trail follows the stream for half an hour and crosses the bridge to the right side. Today we will enjoy the spectacular views of the Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tshering Gang. Then walk towards the valley, almost flat for a while, until the climb to the Neyle La pass at an altitude of 4830m and descend to a circular hut below Lingzhi, where we will camp and obtain our first views of the truly mystical Dzong atop a high hill.
12KM | 5-6 HOURS | 100M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 3850M
This is a Magical day. After we leave Lingzhi, we will gently climb gently to reach another delightful village right below a 300m cliff, Gongyul. Another hour walk brings us to a lovely little valley with a huge waterfall at one end of the village of Chebesa. Camp by the rive side of stream at an altitude of 3850m.
17KM | 6-7 HOURS | 580M ASCENT | 290M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4130M
Today, begin with a stiff climb up to Gobu La pass at an altitude of 4420m. After the pass, we drop through forests of dwarf rhododendron. In the afternoon continue along the up and down path, cross the stream and then walk through rhododendron forest and yak herder’s camp. You may see blue sheep. Camp at altitude of 4130m.
15KM | 5-6 HOURS | 620M ASCENT | 590M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4160M
We will begin a long haul over the Jarela pass at 4750m. where once again get stunning views of the Himalayan Mountains above us. Then descent to Tsharijathang valley, the summer residence of rare Himalayan Takins (national animal of Bhutan). After crossing the stream towards the left, the trail ascends till you reach Robluthang. Camp at an altitude 4160m.
19KM | 7-8 HOURS | 850M ASCENT | 870M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4100M
It is one of the hardest days of the trek. We climb up to Shingchen la pass at an altitude of 5010m and are rewarded with stunning views of mountains, including the spectacular Gangchen Ta at the head of the valley. After the pass, descent to Lingmithang. The path is quite narrow, and you may have to cross a stream time and again. Arrive campsite at an altitude 4140m.
10KM | 4-5 HOURS | CAMP ALT 3850M
The day to Laya is very pleasant with wonderful views and walk along the river, one of the tributaries of Mochhu. You will pass through a damp forest filled with moss and singing birds. Arrive at Laya village, the second highest settlement in the country at altitude of 3850m.
We have a rest day at Laya and one can take a leisurely walk through the village or short hike above the Laya village.
19KM | 7-8 HOURS | 900M ASCENT | 70M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4160M
The trail descends to the Lunana junction before climbing to a ridge with panoramic views of the Mo Chhu and Rhodo Chhu valleys. It then follows the Rhodo Chhu upstream, passing through conifer and rhododendron forests before reaching above the tree line. From a large rockslide, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the glacial valley and the massive glacier on Tsenda Gang (7,100m). The day ends at Rodophu camp (4,160m), just beyond a wooden bridge over the Rhodo Chhu.
17KM | 5-6 HOURS | 755M ASCENT | 15M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4900M
Today’s trek follows alpine grasslands where yaks are commonly seen. The trail runs along the river through rhododendron shrubs before ascending a hillside into a broad open valley. You will then climb to Tshomo La Pass (4,915m), offering stunning views of Mount Jomolhari and the Tibetan border. From there, the path crosses a barren plateau dotted with yak trails before reaching Narithang (4,900m), tonight’s campsite.
18KM | 6-7 HOURS | 220M ASCENT | 770M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4350M
Today’s journey takes you over the Ganglakarchung Pass (5,120m), with breathtaking views of Kangbum (6,530m), Tsendhen Gang (7,100m), Teri Gang (7,300m), and Jejegangphu Gang (7,120m). From the pass, descend across vast moraines to a dramatic cliff edge overlooking hanging glaciers from Teri Gang, which feed into two striking turquoise lakes. One of these lakes burst in 1961, causing a devastating flood in Punakha that washed away the Mochhu Bridge. The trail then drops steeply into a U-shaped valley, following the Tangchu stream to reach tonight’s campsite at 4,350m.
16KM | 5-6 HOURS | 250M ASCENT | 310M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4350M
The trail continues along the Tangchu River, passing through juniper forests and beautiful waterfalls. After a gradual climb out of the valley, the path becomes steeper as you ascend to Woche Village (4,350m), the first settlement in the Lunana region. This marks the beginning of Lunana, and from above the village, you can see the route leading towards Lhedi for the next day’s journey.
19KM | 6-7 HOURS | 300M ASCENT | 450M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4200M
The trail begins with a climb up the Woche Valley, crossing a small stream and traversing a moraine before descending to a wooden bridge over the Woche Chu. From here, you ascend past a pristine glacial lake to reach Keche La Pass (4,650m), offering spectacular views of surrounding peaks, including the striking three-pronged Jejegangphu Gang. After the pass, the path descends into the Phochu Valley, reaching Thaga Village (4,050m), where strong, cold afternoon winds are common in autumn. Continuing downhill, the route passes scattered settlements and waterfalls before following the Phochu River to Lhedi (4,200m). This village has a school, a Basic Health Unit, and a wireless station, serving as a key settlement in the remote Lunana region.
19KM | 5-6 HOURS | 250M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 4250M
Today’s trek is relatively easier, following the north bank of the Phochu River and passing several small farms before reaching Chuzo Village (4,090m) around midday, with a chance to visit Chezo Dzong en route. After lunch, the trail continues along the riverbed before making a steep climb up a hill that offers a commanding view of Thanza Valley (4,250m).
Today offers two optional experiences. You may visit Thanza Village, a remote and traditional settlement where people live a medieval-like lifestyle. Their diet largely consists of grains, yak meat, and cheese from lower valleys. Alternatively, you can hike across small moraine rocks to the glacial lakes of Raphstreng Tsho and Thorthormi Tsho, sources of the Phochu River that caused a major flood in 1994. Both options provide breathtaking views of the 7,100m Table Mountain (Zongphu Gang), a massive wall of ice and snow towering above Thanza Valley.
18KM | 7-8 HOURS | 750M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 5000M
Today’s trek begins with a gradual climb to a ridge south of Thanza, followed by an easy walk to Danji (4500m), a summer grazing area where blue sheep are often seen. From here, ascend to a ridge with superb mountain views before reaching a junction—one trail leading to Gangkar Phuensum and the other to Tshochena. Taking the latter, you’ll cross Jaze La Pass (5200m), offering panoramic vistas of surrounding peaks. The trail then descends past snow-capped mountains and alpine lakes to the campsite at Tshochena (5000m).
14KM | 5-6 HOURS | 170M ASCENT | 120M DESCENT |CAMP ALT 5050M
We follow the shore of a blue-green lake and then climb to a ridge at 5150m, which offers panoramic views of snowy peaks in 360-degree. From here, the road and the microwave tower at Dochu La can also be viewed in far distance. The trail goes up and down over a small, rounded hill. We then pass a glacial lake and reach Loju La pass (5170m), which is a yak pasture with many crisscrossing yak trails. We take a trail that crosses a small saddle-like hill at 5120m to a wide glacial valley. We descend further down to Jichudramo camp (5050m) – this is the highest campsite on our entire trek.
15KM | 5-6 HOURS | 300M ASCENT | 950M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4400M
The trail climbs along a moraine path to the stunning Rinchen Zoe Pass (5350m), which separates the Phochu and Mangdechu basins. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views of Gangkar Puensum (7520m), Bhutan’s highest peak, and clearly see the contrast between dense forests and barren high-altitude terrain. The route then descends through a broad marshy valley dotted with lakes, moraines, and yak pastures before reaching the Tampe Chu valley, surrounded by rhododendron and juniper forests. Tonight’s camp will be at Thongsa Thang (4400m), a short distance from Chukarpo.
19KM | 7-8 HOURS | 80M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4320M
The trail descends along the right bank of the river to reach the Galapang yak pasture (4025m). From here, it makes a steep climb through forests of juniper and silver fir, eventually leading to Tampetsho, a stunning turquoise lake nestled in a bowl of steep ridges. The campsite is set at the end of the lake at an altitude of 4320m, offering a serene and picturesque setting for the night.
16KM | 4-5 HOURS | 280M ASCENT | 980M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 3620M
Today’s trek begins with a steep climb to Tampela Pass (4600m), where sightings of blue sheep are common. From the pass, the trail descends to the sacred Omtsho Lake, believed to be where Terton Pema Lingpa discovered a treasure in the 15th century. Passing prayer flags at the lake’s outlet, the trail drops steeply past a waterfall to a smaller lake before meeting the left bank of the Nika Chu River. Following the river through mixed forests, we finally arrive at Maraothang (3620m), a wide-open meadow with yak herder camps. Your car will be waiting here to drive you to Wangdue. Overnight hotel in Gangtey.
Today after breakfast, visit the Black Necked Crane information center. Later from the Khene Lhakhang you will set out for an exploratory hike on the Gangtey Nature Trail, the hike ends at Gangtey Goenpa Monastery. Visit the Monastery and drive to Punakha. Overnight in Resort.
Today, drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. En route, visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, beautifully set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers and Chimi Lhakhang. Continue the journey via Dochula Pass, offering panoramic Himalayan views. On arrival, check into your hotel and later visit Kuensel Phodrang, home to the 169ft Buddha Dordenma—one of the world’s largest bronze statues. The evening is free to stroll around Thimphu town at your leisure. Overnight at a hotel in Thimphu.

Drive back to Paro International Airport. Farewell and departure with unforgettable memories. Have a pleasant flight back home.
