The Nub Tshonapata Trek is a unique and less-explored adventure through the remote mountains of Haa in western Bhutan. This trek stands apart for its pristine trails, local myths, and the spectacular turquoise-blue Nub Tshonapata Lake, a sacred jewel of the region. The journey passes through untouched forests of rhododendron and juniper, alpine meadows, yak-herder settlements, and breathtaking passes reaching up to 4350m. For trekkers seeking serenity, natural beauty, and a route less travelled, this trek is a hidden gem in Bhutan’s Himalayas.

Itinerary

On a clear day, the flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Upon arrival, you will be greeting you by our representative. In Paro, visit the 17th century Ta Dzong (watch tower). Next head to the Paro dzong (Rinpung Dzong) meaning “fortress of the heap of the Jewels”. Overnight in resort.

After breakfast, you will hike to the magnificent Taktshang Monastery at 3100m. after exploring the monastery, you enjoy a lunch at the Taktshang cafeteria. After lunch you will walk further down to the valley where your transport will be waiting to transfer you back to the town. Explore the Paro town and hotel. Overnight in resort.

Drive to Haa by Chelela Pass one of the highest motorable roads in Bhutan. On clear day you will see mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey. Descend down to the Haa valley. Visit Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple). Evening explore Haa town. Overnight in Hotel.

14KM | 5-6 HOURS | 230M ASCENT | DESCENT 60M | CAMP ALT 2870M

The trek begins with a gradual climb through rhododendron and conifer forests, ascending over Talela Pass (3780m). Continue to a yak-herder’s camp at Tshojo, then make your way over the Gochula Pass (4200m) before following a ridge and descending gently to camp at Womji.

22KM | 7-8 HOURS | 690M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 3750M

Today’s route ascends through juniper and rhododendron forests to reach Gochhila Pass (4350m), offering spectacular views of the Tshejala Range. Continue along trails dotted with yak-herder camps and, in spring, carpets of wildflowers. The trail also passes sections of the ancient trade route that once linked Haa to Tibet before arriving at Tshona Pata.

Spend the day exploring the sacred Nub Tshonapata Lake, visiting yak-herder camps, spotting golden trout, or hiking in the surrounding hillsides for panoramic views.

19KM | 6-7 HOURS 

Retrace your steps back to Gochhila Pass, then take an alternate route across a ridge to Lake Tshojo. Enjoy a picnic by the lake before descending to your campsite in a yak meadow nearby.

10KM | 3-4 HOURS | 660M ASCENT | 660M DESCENT 

The final leg descends gradually through rhododendron and juniper forests, crossing Talela Pass once more before re-entering the Haa Valley. Here, your transport will be waiting to transfer you to Paro, where you’ll spend the night.

After breakfast, according to your flight schedule we will drive you to the airport.
