GANGKAR PUENSUM TREK- 17 Days
Itinerary
Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your
hotel. After some rest, enjoy a leisurely exploration of Paro Valley and visit the National Museum(Ta
Dzong). Visit Rinpung Dzong, an impressive fortress-monastery overlooking the valley, and stroll through
the streets of Paro town.
Today’s hike to the iconic Paro Taktsang,Tiger’s Nest Monastery provides an excellent opportunity for
acclimatization before the trek.
The monastery clings dramatically to a sheer cliff nearly 900 metres above the valley floor. According to
legend, Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a sacred cave, making it one of
Bhutan’s holiest pilgrimage sites.
After exploring the monastery, descend back to the parking lot and drive to the hotel.
Enjoy a spectacular domestic flight over the Himalayas to Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland.
Upon arrival, visit Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang, and Jakar Dzong.
Spend the remainder of the day preparing equipment for the expedition.
13KM 5-6 HOURS
Drive to Nasiphel, where the trekking crew and pack horses await.
The trail follows the beautiful Chamkhar Chhu River through mixed forests of pine, fir, birch, and
rhododendron. Traditional yak-herding camps appear as you gradually gain altitude.
16KM 6-7 HOURS
Continue steadily uphill through pristine forests into the alpine zone. The scenery becomes increasingly
open with magnificent mountain views.
Camp near Tsampa, close to the military permit checkpoint that protects Bhutan’s northern frontier
12KM 5-6 HOURS
The landscape changes dramatically as you enter high alpine yak grazing country.
Cross mountain streams, pass scattered yak-herder settlements, and enjoy spectacular views of
snow-covered peaks.
9KM 4-5 HOURS
A shorter trekking day allows gradual acclimatization.
As you approach Bamurpa, the immense northern Himalayan skyline unfolds, with unforgettable views
toward the sacred massif of Gangkhar Puensum.
Camp in a magnificent alpine meadow beneath towering glaciers.
Hike toward glacial moraines and the Chamkhar Glacier, providing breathtaking panoramic views of
Gangkar puensum. Afternoon leisure time and shower.
21KM 7-8 HOURS
Continue descending from Gangkar Puensum Basecamp through forest and along the chamkhar chu.
Distance: 10 km | Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, we cross the Chamkhar Chhu and begin a gradual ascent through beautiful forests of
juniper, rhododendron, and fir. Along the way, we enjoy impressive views of Tshampa Goenpa and the
surrounding mountain landscapes. The trail passes through peaceful side valleys and pristine wilderness
before reaching Tshosarp campsite.
The shorter trekking day allows time to relax, enjoy the spectacular Himalayan scenery, and prepare for
the upcoming high-altitude sections of the trek.
Distance: 15 km | Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
After breakfast, we continue our journey through the remote and dramatic landscapes of the Snowman
Trek. The trail crosses high alpine terrain with magnificent views of snow-capped peaks, rocky slopes,
and wide mountain valleys.
We trek through yak grazing areas and untouched wilderness, experiencing the true beauty and solitude of
Bhutan’s high Himalayas. After a rewarding day of trekking, we arrive at Tashisa campsite, surrounded
by peaceful mountain scenery.
Distance: 13 km | Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Today, gradually descend from the high alpine region towards Chokchomey. Along the way, enjoy
beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as the landscape changes from rugged rocky
terrain to lush green surroundings.
The trail passes through remote mountain areas and traditional yak-herding grounds, offering a peaceful
Himalayan experience. Continue the descent before reaching the campsite at Chokchomey for an
overnight stay
Distance: 14 km | Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
Our final trekking day begins with a descent through beautiful forests of juniper, fir, and rhododendron
towards Dur village. The trail follows mountain streams and offers a last glimpse of the remote wilderness
of the Snowman Trek.Upon reaching Dur, we complete our trek and drive to Bumthang.
Drive across Bhutan’s spectacular central mountain passes, enjoying ever-changing scenery of forests,
valleys, and traditional villages.
Stop at viewpoints and cultural attractions along the way before arriving in Punakha.
Driving: 7–8 hours
Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong and Chimilhakhang temple ( fertility temple)before driving through
the scenic Dochula Pass back to Thimphu.If weather permits, enjoy panoramic Himalayan views from the
pass.
Driving: 2-3 hours.
Spend the day exploring Thimphu, where modern development blends beautifully with Bhutan’s rich
traditions. Begin with a visit to the impressive Buddha Dordenma Statue, one of the world’s largest seated
Buddha statues, offering panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley. Continue to the Memorial Chorten, a
beautiful white stupa built in memory of Bhutan’s Third King. Next, visit Changangkha Monastery, a
historic temple where local families traditionally seek blessings for their children. Proceed to the Takin
Preserve to see Bhutan’s unique national animal, the takin.
Conclude the day with a visit to the magnificent Tashichho Dzong, an important centre of Bhutan’s
government and monastic administration, admired for its impressive traditional architecture. Overnight
stay in Thimphu.
Drive to Paro International Airport for departure, leaving Bhutan with cherished memories and
unforgettable experiences.
