Itinerary
On a clear day, the flight to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our representative. In Paro, visit the 17th-century Ta Dzong (watchtower). Next, head to the Paro dzong (Rinpung Dzong), meaning “fortress of the heap of the jewels.” Overnight in Paro.
After breakfast, begin your hike to the world-renowned Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s most iconic landmark. Perched dramatically on the edge of a 900m cliff, this sacred site is where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated in the 8th century. The hike takes you through fragrant pine forests, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and viewpoints offering breathtaking glimpses of the monastery clinging to the rock face. Stop for a traditional Bhutanese lunch at the cafeteria overlooking the monastery before descending back to the valley. In the late afternoon, drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s bustling capital (about 1 hour), passing scenic rivers and villages along the way. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Altitude: 2320m
Spend the day exploring Thimphu, a city were modern development blends harmoniously with deep-rooted traditions. Begin with a visit to the towering Buddha Dordenma Statue, one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world, overlooking the valley. Continue to the Memorial Chorten, a whitewashed stupa built in honor of Bhutan’s third King. Next, visit Changangkha Monastery, a 12th-century temple popular among locals seeking blessings for their children, and the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s unique national animal. End the day at the impressive Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body, with its grand architecture glowing beautifully in the evening light. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
This morning, travel to Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m), where on a clear day you can enjoy sweeping views of the Himalayan range. The pass is also home to 108 chortens (stupas) built as a tribute to Bhutanese soldiers. En route, make a stop at Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility, dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, the “Divine Madman.” Upon arrival in Punakha, visit the stunning Punakha Dzong, strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness,” this fortress is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically significant monuments. Overnight in Punakha.
After breakfast, take a scenic drive to Gangtey Valley (Phobjikha), one of Bhutan’s most picturesque glacial valleys and the winter habitat of the rare Black-Necked Cranes (Nov–Feb). Visit the Gangtey Gompa, an important Nyingma monastery dating back to the 17th century, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this remote valley dotted with traditional farmhouses. If time permits, explore short nature trails offering panoramic views of the valley. Later, return to Punakha, where you will spend the night, enjoying the serene rural landscapes and warm hospitality.
This morning, drive back to Thimphu, retracing your route across Dochula Pass. Upon arrival, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into Bhutanese rural life and traditional architecture. Afterward, enjoy free time in the capital to shop for souvenirs, handicrafts, and textiles, or take a leisurely stroll through the town for photography. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Drive back to Paro International Airport. Farewell and departure with unforgettable memories. Have a pleasant flight back home.
